Bangalore University (BU) is set to start an Exam Adalat to address students’ woes regarding issues such as valuation, revaluation, declaration of results and marks cards.

The BU vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev told DNA that the varsity has appointed a district judge for the Exam Adalat, which would look into about 4,200 cases that are pending for three-four years. He said clearing all cases might take three months. “The university will accept whatever decision is taken and I hope the students do too,” he said.

Regarding the recent protests in BU, Dev said these problems had always existed. He contended that nobody used to complain when the exam results were declared in six months. But now everybody is complaining even though the results are being declared in 22 days.

BU students refute the V-C’s claim. A student said although the second semester exams were held in July, the results were yet to be announced. Students said they had faced a similar delay for the result of their first semester exam.

Dev asserted that he has brought about many reforms. He said before he took over as the V-C in February, 2009, there were about 98,600 answer sheets of November-2008 exam that had come in for revaluation. In the exams held in November, 2011, he said there were only about 3,800 applications for revaluation.

He pointed out that the protests have intensified in the last 45 days. On Tuesday, he went to his office amid police security. Notwithstanding the protests, he said he would go ahead with his plans.

Regarding other developments, Dev said the draft for BU’s School of Economics is ready and will soon be handed over to the governor. In the context of the recent protests, Dev said he hoped no negative inferences are drawn by the Jindal group, which is sponsoring the school. Citing a letter, he said the first investment of Rs50 crore is expected to arrive before March, 2012.

Special press
Bangalore will soon get a high-security printing press exclusively to print confidential documents. It would be set up at Peenya. Question papers for various exams, state budget booklets, various permits and licences would be printed here. The next budget would allocate funds for it, said primary and secondary education minister Visveshwara Hegde Kageri.
