An outing at Hebbal Lake proved fatal for two of a group of PUC students on Friday. An assistant sub-inspector’s son and his friend met with a watery grave when they went to the lake for a swim.

The police said about eight PUC students of BEL College had gone to the lake after college hours. One of them, 16-year-old Sandesh, son of Rajappa who is serving as an assistant sub-inspector at Vidyaranyapura police station, reportedly lost his balance and drowned as he went deeper into the lake. Sandesh’s friend, Sandeep, 20, who rushed to save him, also met with the same fate.

Kodigehalli police said after Sandeep and Sandesh disappeared, their scared friends did not attempt to rescue the duo. They fled the spot and one of them informed Sandesh’s brother Rohit who registered a complaint with the police.

The incident occurred at 2.30 pm and Kodigehalli police were informed an hour late.

Police and fire personnel rushed to the lake and could only manage to fish out Sandesh’s body. Sandeep’s body was yet to be traced. The police will resume the rescue operation on Saturday morning.

None of the family members of Sandeep, a Kodigehalli Gate resident, have approached the police yet. Kodigehalli police are investigating.
