The city police were aware of the rivalry between Mohammed Ali alias Diwan Ali and Mahim alias Mahin.

City police commissioner Shankar M Bidari said on Sunday that he had received information that Ali had given contract (supari) to a rowdy, Jafru, to eliminate Mahim.

Meanwhile, Mahim had set up a seven-member gang to eliminate Diwan. He had provided a car (KA-05-5862) and given supari to the gang members to kill Diwan.

The gang members have been identified as Shanawaz, Tasleem of Neelasandra, Shann and Mugam of Tilaknagar, Boti Nayeem of Shivajinagar and Katte Shabbir of Bommanahalli.

The police commissioner summoned both of them separately and advised them to forget the rivalry and denounce their wayward ways.

However, police intelligence reported that Ali and Mahim had not heeded to the commissioner’s advice, and were plotting to murder the other.

“We discussed the criminal activities of Mahim and Diwan in a meeting with DCPs and other officers 15 days ago and decided to detain them under the Goonda Act. We have been preparing the necessary documents to detain them. The procedure would have finished in another three days,” Bidari said.

The rivalry between Ali and Mahim dates back to 2009, when a rowdy belonging to another gang was murdered in Banashankari.
It has been suspected that Mahin was involved in the murder of rowdy Shahdab alias Machhi. Mahin reportedly approached Ali for help. He wanted the corporator to threaten two witnesses, so that they would not depose before a court.

But Ali turned down the request, which created a rift between the two, culminating in the corporator’s murder. Sources said the men’s interests in the sand mafia and real estate business in South Bangalore led to the rivalry. Incidentally, Mahim had scripted an autobiographical screenplay and produced a movie, Nanda, based on it with Shivraj Kumar as the lead actor.     kumarsantosh@dnaindia.net
