There is good news for those who are waiting for the Namma Metro to begin operations. Commuters, who face a tough time dealing with autorickshaw drivers, can now heave a sigh of relief.

Metro rates can help in not only saving some bucks, but it promises a more comfortable and swifter ride as well.

According to a report sent by the sub-committee of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to the board of directors, the maximum fare on Reach One (Byappanahalli to MG Road) will be Rs15.

The minimum fare on this stretch would be Rs10. While an autorickshaw or a BMTC bus takes nearly half an hour to travel between these two points, the Metro ride will take just 14 minutes. An autorickshaw ride on this stretch would cost about Rs50.

Ravi Prakash, spokesman of BMRCL, said that the meeting between the board and the sub-committee would happen any time when the trial runs are on.

A month before the Metro opens to the public, the fare chart would be ready. Metro officials had earlier announced that the fares would be one-and-a-half times that of BMTC buses, ranging between Rs10 and Rs15.

“Maximum fares planned  would not exceed Rs15. For shorter distances, fare would vary from Rs10 to Rs12,” BMRCL sources said, indicating that a Metro ride from Byappanahalli to Swami Vivekananda station on SV Road or up to Indira Nagar would cost Rs10 and take five or six minutes.

Similarly, from MG Road towards Trinity Circle and up to Ulsoor stations, the fare will be Rs10. However, till Indira Nagar and SV Road stations, the fare structure will be Rs12 and Rs14 respectively. BMRCL will have two facilities for ticketing — one direct ticketing from counters at every station, and the other through smart cards.

Those possessing a smart card could swipe it at the automatic fare collecting gates at the entry and exit points of each station. The system automatically deducts the fare for the distance travelled.

Initially, the frequency of the five trains to be run on Reach 1 will be four minutes. Carrying capacity would be nearly 1,000 passengers in each direction. The BMTC will operate feeder bus services every 10 minutes from each station.
