More and more politicians are adding their mite to the efforts being taken by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to popularise the concept of Bus Day, intended to make people use public transport more often. And if mayor SK Nataraj is to be believed, corporators in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) would be using bus services more often.

On Bus Day on Friday, Nataraj went to work by bus. He took the public transport from his residence in Jayanagar to the BBMP office near the corporation circle. “Today (Friday) being Bus Day, I wanted to travel by bus,” he told DNA. “I travelled all the way from Jayanagar to the BBMP office by bus,” he said. “I have also sent notices to all the city’s corporators to use bus services as much as possible.”

Bus Day is observed on the 4th of every month. The BMTC hopes the concept will popularise public transport among Bangalore’s residents, especially employees of software companies. This would then reduce pollution in the city.

The other high-profile politician to travel by bus on Friday was state transport minister R Ashok. He travelled by bus from his residence near Hebbal to the Palace Grounds to attend the Global Investors Meet. Ashok has been making it a point to travel by bus on every Bus Day, ever since the concept was introduced on February 4.

Bus Day had been receiving good response from various quarters, BMTC chief traffic manager K Vishwanth said. “In view of the positive response, we have strengthened services on all the corridors of the city, including Old Madras Road, Old Airport Road, Sarjapur Road, Hosur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Tumkur Road and Mysore Road,” he said.

On Friday, about 150 extra buses than usual were deployed, he said.
