A 21-year-old final year law student, studying in Tumkur, allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison at the Central College campus on Saturday evening.

The victim has been identified as Ashalatha. Police said she consumed poison because she was harassed by the university officials.

Sources in Bangalore University claimed that Asha latha had come to the college campus to pay her final year examination fee; others claimed that she has come to check the status of her re-evaluated marks.

Police, however, stated that the real reason behind the extreme step would be known only after Ashalatha  regains consciousness.

The incident took place at 4.30 pm. Ulsoor Gate police, who were alerted about the incident, rushed to the spot.

She was taken to Bowring Hospital for treatment. However, there was no bed available at the intensive care unit.

Later, she was rushed to Gayatri Hospital in Vijayanagar for treatment.

Police said that they are yet to collect details.

“Her parents reached Bangalore after they came to know about the incident. They are in a state of shock. We will talk to them later,” the police officer said.

Delay in fee payment
A source said although Asha had come to pay the exam fee, she has exceeded the due date. Asha was told that university officials may not accept it.

“We suspect that she might have gotten low marks in her last exams. She might have come to pay the re-evaluation fee. But nothing is clear as only the counter clerk will only able to tell the truth,” said a student, who saw her consuming poison.

Vice chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev and registrar (evaluation) TR Subramanya were not available for comment.
