All set to watch the four cricket matches of the ICC World Cup 2011, the BBMP corporators are demanding free tickets. The moot point being they are entitled for the free passes as Chinnaswamy Stadium as it is a BBMP property and therefore a natural sponsor of the cricket match.

After the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana programme, mayor SK Nataraj along with other leaders will discuss with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) secretary Javagal Srinath about providing free tickets.

The issue of not providing free passes for corporators was raised by former mayor and Hanumanthanagar corporator K Chandrashekar during the council meeting held on December 31.He had said that the corporators are entitled for free passes for the cricket matches, as Chinnaswamy Stadium belongs to the BBMP, and the same was also included in the MoU between Chinnaswamy Stadium management and the BBMP.

The management had given only 40 passes for the BBMP corporators for the IPL match held in April. The irked leaders demanded the mayor to levy taxes on Chinnaswamy Stadium for denying the passes.

Chandrashekar said, “After the matter was discussed in the council meeting, the management of Chinnaswamy Stadium had sent a letter to the BBMP. Apart from the ICC World Cup schedule, the letter does not contain anything regarding free passes. There is hardly one month for the cricket match to be held, and we will soon get to know whether they will provide 198 passes,” said Chandrashekar.

The ruling party leader BS Satyanarayana said that the mayor along with the leaders will discuss with the KSCA secretary Srinath about providing free passes for corporators. “We are thinking of getting two passes for each corporator. One will be come at no extra cost, while the corporators will be charged for the other ticket. No corporator can go alone for the cricket match. He is bound to take his family. So we will request Srinath to provide two passes,” he said.
