The drowning of two college students in Hebbal Lake on Friday has opened the eyes of Bangalore police, who are now planning on adding security to the lake’s various entry points.

On Saturday, the police and the rescue team from the Fire and Emergency Services fished out the body of Sandeep (19), a first-year PUC student from BEL College.

The police blamed it on the negligence of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials. Lack of maintenance and fencing in Hebbal Lake has claimed the lives of two students, they said.

“It is easy for anyone to get into the lake, as it has several unguarded entry points. There must be proper fencing or a watchman to prevent students from entering the premises. College students from around Hebbal usually go for swimming in this lake, and there is no one to stop them,” the police said.

BBMP should take measures to ensure that the lake is secure, pointed out Kodigehalli inspector Chandrashekar K. He said that a representation has been given to the BBMP to close various entry points. He also added that proper signboards should be in place to indicate various danger zones in the lake premises.

On Friday, around 3.15 pm, a group of 10 students had gone for swimming in Hebbal Lake. While nine students were from BEL College, one was from St Thomas College. Visiting the lake after college hours was their routine.

However, on this fateful day, when the students were enjoying their swim, they realised that one of their friends Sandesh (16) was drowning. Sandeep, who went to rescue him, also drowned.

The students immediately got in touch with Sandesh’s brother Rohit, who informed the police and lodged a complaint.  The rescue team arrived at the spot on Friday, but they managed to find only Sandesh’s body. Sandeep’s body was found on Saturday at 9.30 am.

Sandesh is the son of sub-inspector Rajappa, a resident of police quarters in Jalahalli Cross. Sandeep, a resident of Kommagundanahalli, was living with his mother and his brother, the police said.
