Friday’s incident is being seen as yet another demonstration of the fact that city police commissioner BG Jyothi Prakash Mirji is inept at crisis management.

Sources said the police had intelligence inputs that at least 50 supporters of former minister G Janardhana Reddy would be at the court complex. The information notwithstanding, the police presence on the court premises was not sufficient. Mirji had deputed only 250 policemen on the premises, overlooking the gravity of the situation.

Taking a serious note of the police’s lapse, even chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda hauled up Mirji, directing him to bring the situation under control or else the CM would have to don the role of city police chief.

The police officials said  producing G Janardhana Reddy in court was a serious issue and demanded foolproof security with additional forces. However, the situation was not given the due importance.

Sources said this indicated that the city police miscalculated the enormity of the event and even the intelligence unit failed.

A police officer deputed at the city court complex said they were expecting that at least this time the police commissioner would act swiftly and give orders to his men to contain the violence at the beginning itself. He said avoiding confrontation with the advocates indirectly encouraged the latter to indulge in violent behaviour.

A senior police officer who was supervising security arrangement on the court premises said the violence was possibly politically motivated, to divert the attention of media. He said the police had sought footage from media to ascertain why the violence broke out.
