In a fast twist to the Sankey Road widening issue, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is all set to auction the trees on the stretch on Wednesday, even as Malleswaram residents’ fight to save the road and trees goes on.

Speaking to DNA, the BBMP deputy conservator of forest (south division) Puttaswamy said the first round auction of 19 trees of various species, which are obstructing the widening of Sankey Road between Ayyappa Swamy Temple on 18th Cross, Malleswaram, and Bhashyam Circle, would take place on Wednesday.

“If we don’t get proper rates or response for auctioning, re-auctions will be held on July 1 and July 7,” he said.
All of a sudden, the BBMP published a related public notice in newspapers on Tuesday itself.

Residents of Malleswaram are in a state of shock over BBMP’s urgency to cut trees.

“I don’t understand the motive behind this “insane hurry”. Residents are still in talks with the government regarding the issue of road widening. Even on Wednesday, we will do our best to save the trees on Sankey Road,” said Dr Meenakshi Bharath, forerunner of the protest against the widening of Sankey Tank Bund Road.

Residents of Malleswaram demanded that the municipal corporation should reveal findings of the survey conducted at Bhasyam Circle which showed that traffic at the junction exceeded 2,400 passenger car units (PCU) per hour.

“A civilian, who has done a survey at the circle, showed us the data. At peak hours, it is 1,262 PCU per hour and at other hours, it is only 400 PCU per hour. Now where is the survey on the traffic done by the BBMP? Ask them to show us,” demanded Suraksha K, an angry resident.

“Let the BBMP complete the underpass near Mariamma Temple and finish the flyover at CNR Rao Junction. Traffic volume will increase. I’m also aware of the futuristic plan of BBMP to widen the roads. But they could show us some data,” said another resident.

The survey undertaken by a civilian at Bhashyam Circle was scrapped by deputy mayor Harish on Monday because it did not have a signature of the authority who conducted the survey.
“I will get the signature of the person who did the survey. But first ask the BBMP where is their survey on traffic volume on this road,” said Bharath.
