Unsatisfied with the details provided by zonal medical officers that 50 massage parlours were permitted to operate in the city, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) deputy commissioner (health) YM Ramachandramurthy has sent a memo to conduct a re-survey of such centres.

Police claim that over 1,000 massage parlours run in the city without a licence.

Central Crime Branch police had earlier written to the BBMP seeking information on the trade licences provided to massage parlours.

In response, Ramachandramurthy instructed zonal health officers to furnish the details of their respective zones.

Even after two months, the Central Crime Branch is still waiting for the complete details of the massage parlours from the health department of BBMP.

According to the details, the south zone has eight massage parlours, while west has two in Rajajinagar.

In east zone, there is one in Hebbal, 20 in Shantinagar, six in CV Raman Nagar, one in Shivajinagar, and eight in Sarvagnanagar. Medical health officers reported that there are two spa licences in Mahadevapura and two more massage parlours in Yelahanka.
There is no massage parlour in Dasarahalli.

Senior officials in BBMP said that the zonal health officers were not bothered about inspecting these parlours to check illegal activities. Most of them were hand-in-glove with owners of the illegal parlours.

Ramachandramurthy said, “The trade licence of the illegally-run massage centres has to be cancelled mercilessly and trade licence fee has to be enhanced,” he said.

The Central Crime Branch had sought the details from the BBMP after it raided a massage parlour in Jayamahal Layout, functioning in an apartment and run by a socialite, and arrested 19 persons including 10 women for alleged involvement in prostitution on May 11.

“Meanwhile, we are inspecting all the massage parlours in the city to check illegal activities,” said CCB assistant commissioner of police (Women and Narcotics) SY Guled.
