In a freak accident, a 23-year-old housewife was electrocuted on Thursday while drying clothes near her house in Manjunatha Nagar in Marathahalli. The deceased has been identified as Radhika S.

According to the police, the incident took place at 11.30am when Radhika was hanging washed clothes for drying on a metal wire, which was tied to a street light on one end.

A live wire from the electric pole got earthing and power started passing through the drying line too. Radhika got electrocuted when she came in contact with it.  She screamed on experiencing electric shock. Passers-by ran up to her, but none dared to touch her.

She died on the spot. Police have registered a case of negligence and abetment to death against Manjunatha, the Bescom contractor.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Bescom and the contractor had not taken enough safety measures.

The wire connecting the street light was left open without a switch and it

was left dangling so low that even children could touch the wire. As per the usual practice,  residents used to insert the wires into a pin plug to switch on the street light during evenings and take them off after sunrise.

Radhika was married to Suresh, a car driver, and they have two children. She was running a small stationery shop attached to her house.

The body was handed over to the family after postmortem. A case has been registered at the HAL police station.

Risky step
Radhika too was at fault. She should not have tied the metal wire to the electric pole. But in many congested areas, people do not have proper place even to walk.  Bescom officials should not have laid the pole at that spot and even if they have done it, they should have ensured there was a plug and a switch to operate the street light, police said.
