Ramesh Kumar, 49, an electrician who was riding to Rajarajeshwari Medical College on Mysore Road where he runs a canteen, is now dead because of sheer negligence on the part of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) engineers and a driver of cement mixer truck that crashed into him.

He had come along Outer Ring Road (ORR) and was waiting on his two-wheeler in the poorly lit 200-metre-long underpass at the junction of the Nayandahalli Outer Ring Road for the traffic signal to turn green when a speeding cement mixer truck, coming down the slope of the underpass, crashed into him before proceeding to bludgeon a jeep, eight cars and another two-wheeler.

Byatarayanapura traffic police inspector T Mallesh said the truck hit Kumar’s two-wheeler first, followed by a jeep, two cars, a bike and then four other cars, all of which were waiting at the signal.

Totally, 12 vehicles were involved in the accident, including eight cars.

Kumar was crushed between the truck and jeep. The traffic police, who rushed to the spot from the ORR-Mysore Road Junction, took Kumar to BGS Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

His body was shifted to Victoria Hospital and then handed over to his family members. The driver of the cement mixer truck is absconding. The police have launched a search for him.

One rear seat occupant of the jeep, Murugan, a native of Tamil Nadu, was also seriously injured and shifted to a private hospital where he was stated to be out of danger.

A few others sustained minor injuries and were treated as outpatients in various clinics close by. Traffic police inspected the accident spot and said the lighting in the underpass was poor as a result of negligence on the part of BDA engineers.

Also, the truck driver did not switch on the headlights when he sped into the underpass.

Hence, he probably failed to see that there were vehicles waiting at the end of the tunnel.

The accident caused a major traffic jam along ORR, which took a couple of hours to be cleared. The Byatarayanapura police have registered a case and are investigating it.
