Bangalore armed reserve police personnel were deployed on Haris Road in Benson Town following tension over the mysterious death of a 28-year-old woman at her in-law’s house in JC Nagar police station limits on Monday.

The police registered murder and harassment cases on a complaint by Iqbal Khan, father of the deceased, Asma Khan. The woman’s father in-law, factory owner Mohamood Khan, mother-in-law Rahejan and sister-in-law Nabida have been arrested.

Asma, hailing from a poor family, married Mohamood’s speech and hearing impaired son Fairoz Khan six years ago. The woman’s relatives alleged that her in-laws had harassed her to death her, and were trying to make it look like a suicide case. They said strangulation marks were found on the dead woman’s neck.

Asma had gone to her parents’ house on Sunday, but cut short the visit after receiving a call from her mother-in-law. On Monday around 2 pm, her mother Sahira received a call from the Mohamood’s house, saying she had committed suicide.

The mother was leaving alone for Asma’s place. But suspecting foul play, the woman’s relatives accompanied her. When they arrived at the house of Asma’s in-laws, she was found dead, lying on the floor. Additionally, the death was not reported to the police.

A scuffle between the relatives followed, in which the house was damaged.

The police were informed of the death only after Asma’s relatives approached them around 3.30pm. The police shifted the body to Dr BR Ambedkar Medical College for a post-mortem examination, which would be conducted on Tuesday.

The woman’s relatives, meanwhile, gathered at the JC Nagar police station, demanding justice. The crowd disappeared around 9pm only after the police arrested Asma’s in-laws.

Asma’s uncle said that the woman’s husband Fairoz, was a good person. However, the deceased woman’s in-laws did not like her visiting her parents. He added that her brother-in-law had earlier promised to put an end to the harassment she had been facing.
It was also said that Asma was averse to living at Mohamood’s house, but continued at her mother’s insistence.

The police said that the post-mortem examination would reveal the exact cause of death. Armed policemen were stationed at Mohamood’s house to prevent any untoward incidents.
