January 17, 2012-born Neha Afreen died on Wednesday after an 85-day battle with life during which she survived several alleged attempts to kill her by her father who never wanted a daughter. Baby Neha was admitted to Vani Vilas Hospital last Thursday with severe brain and body injuries after her father Umar Farooq, 27, allegedly launched a brutal assault on her with a blunt object due to which she had slipped into a coma, requiring life support system.

Doctors finally removed her from the ventilator at 10.30 am, but declared her dead only at 11.10am.

Farooq, lodged in Parappana Agrahara Central Jail after being remanded in judicial custody, now faces a murder charge under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 302.

Assistant commissioner of police D Narayana Swamy said, “The report of murder has been submitted to court.”

Farooq after being arrested on Sunday was initially remanded in judicial custody for 15 days, but the custody will now be extended as it has been converted into a murder case and he will not be granted bail as he faces a murder charge, the police said.
Baby Neha’s body was handed over to her grief-stricken mother Reshma Bhanu and other family members after a post mortem was conducted at Victoria Hospital.

The post mortem report will be given to the police within two days. The body was taken to Reshma Bhanu’s parent’s house in DJ Halli.

The KG Halli police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on Reshma’s statement detailing the extent of harassment her baby and she were put through at the hands of her husband Farooq (Reshma is his second wife) because he did not want a daughter. Unconfirmed allegations by Reshma also indicate that although she had conceived twins, one of the foetuses could not survive because Farooq fed her food laced with chemicals – an allegation that is contested by experts who believe if that was the case both foetuses would have been killed. The one which survived was born as Neha who died on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Farooq was not informed about his daughter’s death. A jail officer told DNA that he appeared to have no tensions at all over the fate of his daughter in spite of maintaining, during interrogations, that he had never harmed her or his wife.
Child Welfare Committee (CWC), too, has registered a case under the section 25 Juvenile Justice Act.
