A 52-year-old primary school teacher from Hubli, Shabeen Banu, today lives a perfectly healthy life. However, two years ago, the scenario was different. One complication after the other shadowed Shabeen, as she had to undergo two surgeries.

It all started with complications in menstrual cycle. “At 50, my menstrual cycle was continuing and I was yet to get my menopause. As I consulted doctors in Hubli, I was advised on certain tests that revealed cervical cancer. This was in 2009 and soon I had to undergo a surgery where my uterus was removed,” remembered Shabeen.

As her daughter-in-law was taking care of her, an ailing Shabeen thought that her health will be fine.

Within a year, again Shabeen started getting problem in passing her urine. An MRI scan suggested recurrence of cervical cancer with a tumour this time being visible at her pelvic area. Shabeen’s family got to know about HealthCare Global Ltd (HCG) from a relative and got her to Bangalore.

“Initially, when she came for the second opinion, she was apprehensive about the treatment and the outcome, especially the surgery. We had to motivate and counsel her to undergo the treatment. It was a complicated surgery as it was recurrent tumor and involved resection of the ureter, rectum and pelvic side wall,” said Dr Aditi Bhat, consultant, surgical oncologist, HCG. The entire treatment for Shabeen at HCG including chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy took six months.

Now, about eight months post her treatment, Shabeen is doing fine. She needs to come for a follow-up once in every three months, where she undergoes clinical examination and a CT or MRI scan, as required.
