One of the long-standing demands of people from the city police has been relaxing the 11.30 pm deadline as many in the city work till late in the night and do not get food outside once their work is over. Will you extend the deadline?
I am not for nightlife. People who work in the graveyard shift have canteen in their office. They should make their own arrangement for food. Extending the time to close, if brought into effect, will apply to bars, pubs, discotheques too. People do get drunk and drive, risking not only theirs but others' life as well. If the closing-down time is extended, we will have to deploy more men on the field, something that is not possible as we do not have enough men. Night is meant to sleep. Let people sleep peacefully, without disturbance by cacophony of vehicles.

What will be your priorities as the city police commissioner?
My top priority will be ensuring that the city dwellers, especially women and children, feel safe. This can be achieved by creating awareness among citizens on precautions and safety measures. This will be done through increasing the number of police-community meetings and encouraging policemen to work more professionally.

How do you plan to ensure safety of women and children?
Crimes against women and women's problems can be solved by ensuring time-bound investigation. I can assure quick investigation, but trials are not in our hands. I concede that the current pace of investigations is not satisfactory and some changes are required. Each case needs to be handled sensitively. We will also take help of the civil society and NGOs to check crimes against women.

How do you plan to arrest the increasing crime rate in the city?

I agree that crime is on a rise in the city, but it is also because the police are registering more number of cases.
I have instructed policemen to register all cases with which people come. We have some plans to prevent property offences, body offences, group rivalries and rioting.

People perceive policemen as corrupt individuals. Night beat police, especially those on Cheetah vehicles, do not do rounds and check vehicles for documents, to make money out of those who do not have proper documentation.
Yes, I agree corruption persists in the police department. I have strictly warned the police force not to seek bribe or harass people. Beat police, Hoysala or Cheetah squad should work as per their respective protocol, or else action would be taken against them.

How do you plan to check traffic problems in the city, such as congestion caused by vehicles parked on the road even during peak hours?
Congestion is largely owing to narrow roads. Widening them is the job of the town planning department. At best, we can just manage traffic. Given the shortage of staff, we are doing the best we can in managing traffic and ensuring smooth flow of vehicles.
