Build, engage and monetise is what a game developer should look at, suggests Parag Gupta, principal, product management, Amazon Appstore. Within six months of their entry in the market, Gupta believes the Appstore is still at step zero and awareness is what they need to work on primarily. “When you talk about the Indian market, I don’t really see the major difference as it is only the zip code that changes. The developers and users here are otherwise very global in their perspective. They are not thinking local anymore and are touching global scales. The only place I see a change is the content category. But again, for us, it is what the developers and users want,” said Gupta.

Elaborating on the existence of Amazon Appstore in the Indian market, Gupta added, “We want to get more Indian developers excited about the global reach, help them discover platforms and monetise better. From the user perspective, we want them to try out more categories that provide more options. We are becoming more embedded in the Indian eco-system but our message and value are still global.”

On the parameters that define the success of an online appstore, Gupta shared his insights. There are three different things that help push forward an appstore online. The first is selection of the right apps. “We are not looking at hitting a million mark but at just providing what customers are looking for. The second aspect is that of presenting great deals which include a free app for the day. The third and the most important is user experience where our data analytic team helps developers where and how to monetise because at the end of the day it is the revenue that matters,”said Gupta.

He added, “In app purchases is where the app industry is heading to. This is a win-win situation for users and developers. We believe this is going to revolutionise the curve that developers will see on monetising levels. The payment pipeline here is not as smooth as it is in the US, but we are in for long-term investment and it is not like we will shut down if we don’t reach certain levels.”

Gupta’s advice to developers is to find a partner that will help lower their cost of deployment and scaling. “It is not only about building a game, but also scaling it in time and engaging your users. Choose your categories and keywords properly.”
