In a serious loss of face for the ruling BJP, the ruling party in the state has failed to attain the majority in the Hubli-Dharwar municipal corporation in the urban local bodies (ULB) polls results of which were announced on Monday, falling short by one seat.

The party, which controlled the council for five years, got 33 seats in the 67-seat house, and the result has come as an unpleasant surprise, since Hubli-Dharwar is home town of chief minister Jagdish Shettar, party strongman Ananth Kumar and Prahlad Joshi, the MP being projected as state party president. Moreover, the chief minister had campaigned extensively in the twin-cities during a number of visits. The party would rule the council, coopting independents, but the failure to capture power on its own has been disquieting for the leaders and cadres.

Elsewhere in Dharwar district too, the BJP did not fare well. In four town municipal councils, the party had to remain content with 2nd or 3rd place.

It failed to win even a single seat in Kalghatgi Town Panchayat ,where Congress (8), KJP (2), BSRC (2) and JD-S(1) have fared better.

Shettar had even found time to campaign in the small town of Alnavar, where BJP has just won 2 seats out of 15 and Congress won a clear majority with 8 seats.

In Annigeri town, which Shettar gave the status of taluk in his recent budget, the ruling party managed to win just 4 seats against 10 of JD(S) and 8 of the Congress.

In Navalgund, the BJP has ended up as runner-up to the Congress, winning a mere 7 out of 23 seats, with the same story repeating in Kundagol where it won 4 out of 15. The Congress won both the towns comfortably.

What is significant, and this should come as even worse news to the BJP, is that the voters have chosen the Congress as an alternative despite the open dissidence among Congress leaders, even though it must be conceded that the emergence of the KJP did dent the ruling party.
