To encourage cancer patients, survivors to take part in run

An initiative of the AddLife Foundation, that works with cancer survivors and cancer patients, the synchronised run will be held simultaneously in Ahmedabad and Vadodara

A run to showcase that cancer can be defeated and survivors can continue to live a healthy life will see cancer survivors participating in large numbers. The run will take place in the city on February 18. An initiative of the AddLife Foundation, that works with cancer survivors and cancer patients, the synchronised run will be held simultaneously in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Nimisha Gandhi of Addlife Foundation said the motive was healing by moving. "A cancer survivor often gets treated but is mentally too affected. The run is to not just to encourage people to have a healthy lifestyle, but also to show that cancer survivors can continue to live a healthy and fit lifestyle. Research has also proved that a healthy and active lifestyle helps to recover," said Gandhi.

She added that it has been the experience of the foundation after working with a host of cancer patients and survivors that exercise improves the treatment tolerance to cancer.

Devendra Patel, an oncologist who was formerly associated with the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, said cancer was on the rise and a host of reasons were responsible for it. "Tobacco consumption is on the rise and unfortunately all of the government's attention is focused on cigarettes when in fact it is beedi and other forms of tobacco that are being used the most," said Patel. He said another reason why the disease was seeing an upsurge in casualties was that early detection was not happening.

Several types of cancer are curable if detected early. However, despite much effort of the government early detection is not happening, said Devendra Patel, oncologist who was formerly associated with the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute.
