Police allegedly thrashed a few Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers on Tuesday for rioting and obstructing the former from doing their duty. The workers were staging a silent protest at the office of the commissioner of police at Shahibaug against the arrest of nine VHP-Bajrang Dal activists in connection with vandalising Amdavad ni Gufa, where a painting exhibition of Pakistan artists was being held, on August 16.

The police allegedly beat up VHP general secretary and state Bajrang Dal president Ranchhod Bharvad, city VHP president Bachu Ladva, city VHP secretary Raju Patel, VHP media cell in-charge Jay Shah and a couple of other cadres, who have all been admitted to the VS Hospital.

VHP has decided to take up the issue with the state government and seek action against the police officers, who bashed up its cadres. VHP international working president Pravin Togadia condemned the arrest of nine Right-wing activists and also conveyed this to the BJP president on Twitter. The incident is also likely to take a political turn as VHP is not happy with chief minister Narendra Modi, whom it has accused of leaning towards the minorities of late.

“We have registered a case of rioting and obstructing police from doing their duty against six persons, who were protesting at the CP’s office,” said Manoj Ninama, deputy commissioner of police, zone 2. “The mob blocked the entry gate of the CP’s office by not allowing the car of my counterpart Virendra Singh Yadav (DCP zone-1) and also manhandled his guard,” he said. “We have taken action as part of our duty as the mob had covered the policemen there,” added Ninama.

“The police have attacked and bashed up our senior leaders, including me, without any provocation. We were just lodging a silent protest by putting taps on our mouth and carrying black flags. We had decided to hold a 30-minute silent protest. But the police suddenly started attacking us,” alleged Jay Shah.

“The police showed no remorse and detained eight to nine of our cadres apart from registering a case against us. If the Modi government is Hindutvavadi (pro-Hindus), it will take action against the erring police officers,” he added.

According to sources and eyewitnesses’, 40-50 VHP and Bajrang Dal workers went to the CP’s office at Shahibaug on Tuesday afternoon with black flags and banners protesting the arrest of their cadres earlier in the day. They blocked the gate and did not allow DCP Yadav to enter. They even manhandled his guard who pleaded with them to allow the officer’s car to enter the premises. Meanwhile, Ninama arrived in his car and started bashing up the cadres.
