With growing traffic, the 76-km Sardar Patel Ring Road, which encircles Ahmedabad city, would be widened from the existing four lanes to six lanes, at an estimated expenditure of Rs 200 crore.

The ring road's concessionaire, Ahmedabad Ring Road Infrastructure Limited (ARRIL), had written to Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) offering to bear total cost of the road widening project. In return, it sought extension of its concessionaire agreement, which is slated to end on December 31, 2026, by three-and-a-half years.

In its board meeting on Wednesday, AUDA approved the road widening proposal, but rejected the extension request.

"The board has said no to the proposal for extending the concession agreement beyond 2026," said AUDA chairman Vijay Nehra, adding, that they expect the road widening work to be completed in two years.

The Authority's board, however, accepted the request to name two circles on the ring road after Vishnubhai Patel, the founder of ARRIL's parent company Sadbhav Engineering, who passed away recently.

The board also decided that in case ARRIL's toll income exceeded the projections, it would require to share the same with AUDA.
