Private varsity status to reward Balwantsinh Rajput

The issue of Congress members defecting to BJP before last the Rajya Sabha polls in Gujarat resonated in Gujarat assembly on Tuesday.

The debate on Private University Amendment Bill was going on in assembly, in which education department tabled the bill to pass from house suggesting giving the status of private university to the institution run by politician Balwantsinh Rajput. Rajput was Congress leader but defected to BJP just before Rajya Sabha polls. Congress members raised the issue again and again by using different words, although the speaker stopped them.

Ruckus was created in the house over the issue when the ruling party members including the ministers opposed the contentions of opposition MLAs on the Rajya Sabha polls. The government brought this bill to form Gokul Global University in Sidhpur town and that belongs to BJP leader Balwantsinh Rajput. Rajput earlier was Congress leader and party whip in Gujarat assembly during the last term, but left Congress and defected to BJP before the Rajya Sabha polls held in August 2017. He was also made the third candidate of BJP besides Amit Shah and Smriti Irani but lost to Congress candidate Ahmed Patel.

Congress MLAs, including the opposition leader Paresh Dhanani taunted ruling party that government brought this bill as a reward to Rajput for defecting his allegiance. They also alleged that Gujarat government gave permissions to many private universities in state but did not check the quality of education in those. They also put allegations that run for the private university by the government made education costly that was real injustice to poor and backward class students.

The bill for Gujarat Panchayat Act (Amendment) also was passed by the members of the house with the majority of votes. This bill suggested that the powers to withdraw money from the fund of village Panchayat should remain with village head(Sarpanch) and secretary(Patwari), earlier those powers were with any member of panchayat whom Sarpanch accolades the authority and Patwari.
