Two students from the state have made it to the first 25 all-India ranks in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2017 conducted on May 7. The Central Board of Secondary Education on Friday announced the results. While AIIMS topper from Surat, Nishita Purohit, ranked 11, Vishnu Singhal ranked 23.

Language was a big issue in NEET 2017 with many candidates from the state who appeared for the exam in Gujarati claiming the Gujarati and English versions were different as well as had different difficulty levels. Gujarati medium students alleged they would be at a disadvantage.

The number of candidates registered for different languages in NEET 2017 were: English, 80.16 %; Hindi, 10.59 %; Telugu, 00.15 %; Assamese, 00.33 %; Gujarati, 04.20 %; Marathi, 00.08 %; Tamil, 01.33 %; Bengali, 03.02 %; Kannada, 00.06 %; Oriya, 00.03 %; English+Hindi 90.75 %

Girls fared better than boys. Out of 6,16,772 students who took the exam, 3,45,313 have qualified. About 4,73,305 males took the exam and 2,66,221 cleared it.

Signalling a positive development for members of the transgender community pursuing higher education, five of the eight transgenders who appeared for the exam cleared it.  AIIMS topper and NEET AIR 11 Nishita Purohit from Surat is all set to join AIIMS Delhi. While she is happy with her rank and determined to study endocrinology, she says the NEET paper was riddled with flaws. “In Chemistry, one question was incorrect. Many sentences were not framed properly. AIIMS is far better. Also, NEET questions are expected to be from NCERT books, but several were not.”

While Vishnu could not be contacted, four students from the state, excluding Vishnu and Nishita, were within the first 500 ranks. Aryan Mechu, who ranked 185, expected a rank under 100. He said, “Even though I expected my rank to be under 100, I am happy. I want to study cardiology as I am interested in heart-related ailments.”

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET-UG is an entrance examination for students who wish to study graduate medical courses like MBBS/ BDS or postgraduate courses (MD/MS) in government or private medical colleges. NEET-UG replaced the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and all individual MBBS exams conducted by states or colleges in 2013. However, many colleges and institutes had got a stay order and conducted private examinations for admission to their MBBS and BDS courses.

The board stated: The qualified candidates will have to complete formalities with the respective counselling authorities viz DGHS, Medical Education Directorates of States etc. for admission to MBBS/BDS courses. As per the information available on MCI and DCI websites, there are approximately 65,170 MBBS seats in 470 medical colleges, and nearly 25,730 seats in 308 dental colleges.

Counselling schedule

Details and schedule of counselling will be available on the websites of the ministry of health and family welfare and medical education directorates of states.
