Even as votes were being counted to declare the Gujarat Assembly election verdict, workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gathered in hordes as early as 9 am outside the party headquarters at 11, Ashoka Road on the chilly Monday morning.

The party office bore life-size hoardings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As the day proceeded, the stretch from bungalow number 5 to 11 was strewn with flower petals, paper, placards, balloons and the remains of fire-crackers. Enthusiastic party workers expecting a win carried BJP flags and saffron caps and had their faces smeared with gulal (colour) as they shouted slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Modi Zindabad”.

The celebrations also had a tinge of patriotism with Vande Mataram being played in the background. As the leads from various constituencies started coming in, party workers burst cartons of fire-crackers, often posing for the camera. A large number of party supporters, organised in different groups, danced to thumping dhol beats, raising slogans of “Ghar Ghar Modi”.

“I have campaigned in Surat for three months without sleeping for days. The youth is with Modiji,” said Aakash Gupta, 24, a volunteer. Saffron supporters holding a life-size hoarding of Modi had it signed as “Ek Hai Tiger”.

“I am a Modi Bhakt and I say it openly. Gujarat is what it is because of Modi. Congress must remember now that people have rejected them for indulging in appeasement and politics of caste,” said Sanjay Chauhan, a supporter. Hoping for a sweeping victory, Harpreet Singh, a Yuva Morcha member of the party’s Delhi wing, said, “We have ordered 1,000 kg boondi ladoo to make sure each supporter has the sweetmeats to enjoy the fruit of their labour of so many months.”
