As part of cleanliness and anti-spitting drive, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is issuing on-the-spot challans and online memos. Since April 29, 2019, the civic body has issued 105 notices against people who were caught urinating in public and 330 notices for spitting in public.

Of the total challans issued, the highest was in the east zone for open urination and spitting. The civic body has served notice to 62 people for urinating and 131 notices for spitting in public places.

A press release issued by the Solid Waste Management Department said that they have collected Rs 34,900 in fines from seven zones and handed notices to 330 offenders. For public urination, they have collected Rs 10,600 in fines and issued notices to 105 people.

When contacted, the director of the solid waste management department, Harshadray Solanki, said that they don't have any zone-wise preferences. "We are penalising people when we find them spitting and urinating in public. Designated inspection teams are patrolling for the same across all zones. We will continue the anti-spitting drive until we find our surroundings free of red splotches," said Solanki.

"We are working in all zones, equally. Offenders are everywhere. In the east zone, mostly people of the labour class stay and they are also comparatively uneducated. However, even in the other zones, there is a lack of civic sense," added the director.

The department has also fined violators of the plastic waste management rules, and has seized 260kg of banned plastic. The team served notices to 1,027 commercial units and levied fines to the tune of Rs 7 lakh.

JET formed for traffic discipline

The AMC and Ahmedabad Traffic Police have formed a Joint Enforcement Team (JET) for traffic discipline, to enhance seamless vehicular traffic movement and maintain aesthetics of streets. The authorities on Monday announced that they are going to launch electric autorickshaws which would fine traffic offenders and spitting violators. The drive will be launched in June.
