Stung by the criticism over distribution of water along caste lines, the Ahmedabad district authorities swung into action to suspend the sarpanch and talati of Dhanwada village of Bavla taluka. Meanwhile, the sarpanch has blackened the names of the castes put on the bore-well room at the entry point of the village.

“It is a very serious issue, which cannot be tolerated at all. We will not allow anyone involved get away,” said KR Antrolia, the taluka development officer (TDO) of Bavla taluka.

“I will immediately look into the matter and call the sarpanch and talati of the village to explain how it happened. I will also propose to the district development officer to suspend the sarpanch and talati of Dhanwada on the issue,” said TDO.

One of the villagers, Babu Rathod, said they felt really bad when they learnt about the writing on the wall showing caste-wise distribution of water. “We discussed the issue among ourselves and felt that such things should never happen in future,” said Rathod.

“We did not write on the wall intentionally as we have no knowledge of the law. I have started the processof removing it,” said Pratapsinh Dodia, the husband of sarpanch Manisha Dodia.

“I work for dalits in the village. In fact, a dalit sarpanch was at the helm of affairs here for 20 years and it is the first time that a non-dalit sarpanch has been elected with the support of dalits only,” Dodia further stated.

“Someone in the village has blackened the names of the castes on the wall. But, time is still there which shows that they realise the seriousness of the issue. Though the writing is visible to all at the entry point of the village, no government officer has bothered to take care of it,” said Ramila Parmar, the coordinator of Navsarjan Trust, an NGO.
