A large number of police and government officials are being investigated on charges of corruption. And, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has managed to arrest them for having amassed assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.

Rajendra Kumar Paladiya was a class 4 employee at Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation, working as a helper. His net income was much higher — about Rs2 crore — than his known source of income. Paladiya also owned a real estate firm in the name of Gokuldham Developers in Mehsana, as well as two cars and land.  “In just one year, we have investigated 11 to 12 cases of disproportionate assets (DA) and even made arrests.

Still, there is a possibility of more such cases coming to light,” said ACB director Ashish Bhatia.

“Mohitkumar Jani, motor transport police department, IPS officer, was arrested on July 8, 2011, for paying Rs17 lakh as insurance premium. Investigation revealed that Jani’s legal income should be Rs37 lakh, but the amount exceeded his official income by Rs20.12 lakh. Jani owns a home worth Rs 1 crore at the Sardar Centre in Vastrapur. He is currently working as DSP, CID,” said Bhatia.

Borsad PSI DK Rao lives in Sector 1, Gandhinagar. A class 3 officer, he bought a house from former home minister Gordhan Zadaphia for Rs 48l lakh. He was arrested by the ACB on March 3 this year. Rao’s assets exceeded his income by 110 per cent.

That comes to Rs51 lakh more than his official income. Rao owns a shop, worth Rs8,70,000, in his wife’s name in Sector 11 and has bank accounts and investments worth Rs 17 lakh.

In another case, PI JJ Sarvaiyya of the Vadodara crime branch had an income of Rs34 lakh. But, his illegal income was over Rs2 crore, including Rs50 lakh in cash and property worth Rs1.5 crore near Vadodara.

ACB sleuths are on the trail of an RTO supervisor in Porbandar who they say has amassed assets worth Rs 3.16 crore, including 48 properties in and around Ahmedabad.

ACB officials said Jaiswal’s ill-gotten properties include four houses, three apartments, 31 commercial shops, three plots and six huge plots of agricultural land in and around Ahmedabad.

They said that six properties are in his name, 13 in the name of his wife Sushma, 10 in son Dhaval’s name and another 10 in younger son Ujjwal’s name. Nine of his properties are jointly owned.
