Soon Amdavadis including kids would be able to hang out amidst nature, read books on gardening and even buy saplings of vegetables besides listening to experts debate on how to make our city green.

Shanti Sadan, a 100-year-old estate in Mirzapur, owned by Kartikeya Sarabhai, director of Centre for Environment Education (CEE), is being converted into city's first of its kind club-cum-nursery and would be inaugurated in January 2018.

Christened as 'Shanti Sadan Nursery', the place will have over 200 types of saplings of vegetables, herbs and other plants. "The idea behind this nursery is to engage people in gardening and help in making city greener. We hope that the nursery would help in bringing down the temperature of the surroundings by two to three degree Celsius. Our aim is to bring like-minded people on one platform so that they can share ideas on how to bring temperature down," said Sarabhai.

He informed that workshop-cum-discussions would be organised every weekend at the venue, which will also house a library having books on gardening. "People would also be able to sell vegetables grown at their garden besides buying saplings from here. We have also planned a shop which will sell tools and organic compost for gardening," the CEE director said.

Explaining further, he said, "We have identified a few people who grow vegetables at their rooftops to educate the club members on the same. We will tell people how greenery can be increased by growing plants at rooftops, balconies and even in little and narrow spaces. Interactive sessions like lectures and seminars besides a provision of certificate have also been planned."

Sarabhai said a special kids area will help children connect with nature. "Shanti Sadan is a historical place situated in the heart of the city. By such activities, we want to show that greenery is possible every well, if we nurture well. People can come and explore their natural connect here, with family and friends," explained Sarabhai.
