Even after the announcement of International Sports Complex at Naranpura, the plan continues to remain on paper alone. Even as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is desperately searching for a land for the project, it has only been unlucky so far.
The project was proposed by former mayor, Gautam Shah who had mentioned the need for an international sports complex in the western part of the city after the one constructed in Kankaria. The civic body will receive a grant of Rs 85 crore from the Centre.
Location of the upcoming complex was decided between AEC Cross roads and Bhuyangdev cross roads. But, civic officials say they are not getting land in the areas.
"Design and concept of the stadium is ready since long. But the plots are under possession of district collectorate. We have made representation regarding need and purpose of the complex. Now we are waiting from the collector," said NK Modi, additional city engineer, AMC. However, the final design will change according to the size of the plot the AMC would get, said the official. Despite repeated attempts, no reply was received from Ahmedabad district collector, Vikrant Pande.
The other sports complex at Kankaria was developed under the public private partnership while it was decided that at Naranpura it will be operated by civic body. "The stadium will have indoor and outdoor facility, including aquatic sports facility," said Ramesh Desai, chairman of Road and Building Committee.
According to the congress party the project is "waste of money". "What is the demand of the people? They need motorable roads, good quality of air and pure water. But the ruling party is busy showing infrastructural development. To please their top bosses they are developing certain pockets only. Kankaria was developed because of the former constituency of Narendra Modi and now they want to give sports facility at Naranpura former constituency of BJP's president," said Badruddin Shaikh, former leader of opposition and spokesperson of GPCC.
