Ahead of Swachh Survekshan 2019, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is gearing up to improve its ranking. And soon, the civic body is going to start swachhta rounds in all the wards.

Mayor Bijal Patel is hopeful for improvement in the AMC's rankings by implementing several initiatives. First, the swachhta rounds will be resumed. The former mayor Gautam Shah used to have a swachhta round of each ward on Sunday along with some NGOs.

"There are several things we are going to start from October 2, 2018, for the next year's ranking. First of all, we are going to resume the Swachhta Rounds to create awareness among people. With the help of manpower and machine power, we are going to implement the standard of sanitation," said the mayor.

The civic body is going to be stricter on litterbugs. "We are going to be stricter with those that litter. There will be hefty fines imposed on the offenders. We have already started lifting dustbins from city roads. We are going to deploy a person at such spots to prevent people from littering," the mayor added. She said that with the collective efforts of the civic authority and political wing, the city will be among the top ten clean cities of the country.

The ranking system for cities has been changed. There are a total of 5,000 points and the latest edition is plastic-free city status and beautification of gardens. However, citizens' feedback has now been reduced from 35% to 25%.

The civic body's solid waste management and the health department is going to lead this initiative, right from documentation to implementation of the requirements. The department head, Harshad Solanki, said, "I have just got the new allocation on Tuesday. I need some time to review the Swachh Survekshan 2019 parameters."

"Some things such as plastic-free city and toilets are already done. Next up is keeping clean streets intact," added Solanki.

It is to be noted that the city has achieved 12th rank this year, rising two positions from 2016 and 2017's status.
