After crossing all-time high of more than 17,000 MW earlier in the week, peak power demand in the state has fallen sharply in the past two days owing to cloudy weather and rain in some areas.

According to State Load Despatch Centre, Gujarat, peak power demand in the state touched a record high of 17,097 MW on Monday. Prior to that, power demand had crossed 17,000 MW only on one occasion, when it touched 17,000 MW last Friday.

The peak power demand in the state on these two days, as well as many others in recent past, has even overtaken the demand seen during peak summer season. Prior to this month, the all-time high power demand in the state was 15,886 MW, which was recorded on May 26.

"The huge rise in power demand in the past few days is because of more demand from agriculture sector due to an extended dry spell. Moreover, electricity demand from residential and other segments has also gone up as day temperatures are in the range of 38-39 degree Celsius," energy expert KK Bajaj said.

Peak power demand this October is nearly 50% higher than the same days in last year when it was in the range of 11,000-11,900 MW. However, peak power demand has fallen sharply to around 15,300 MW in the past couple of days because of cloudy weather conditions and rains in some parts of the state. Due to cloudy weather, electricity demand from residential and other segments has also fallen.

Officials said that power generation from wind and solar power projects was poor in the past few days, but higher utilisation of gas-based power plants allowed the state to meet the higher demand without load shedding.
