A draft budget of Rs 668 crore was presented for only 371 schools by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) school board this year. According to board member Iliyas Qureshi, 94 schools have shut down this year.
"Last year, the budget was presented for 465 schools. So clearly, 94 schools have shut on paper. Meanwhile, there is a drop in the number of students this year to 9,000," said Iliyas Qureshi, member of the school board.
Qureshi said that from last year's budget, Rs 1.5 crore remained unused which was allotted for picnic and tour for the school kids. "Going by the budget, the board spends nearly Rs 55,000 per student but there is no quality and improvement in education. It is sad to say that actually only three per cent of the budget is being spent on students," Qureshi added.
School administrator Lagdhir Desai announced the draft budget for the next fiscal, which is Rs 668 crore along with several other announcements. This year, the civic body will invest more in developing Google Smart Classes. Last year, seven such class were introduced which have increased to 50 classrooms this year.
Also, five new English medium schools have been introduced at Naranpura, Asarva, Ghodasar, Odhav, and Hathijan. Like every year, this year too there is a provision of installing CCTV cameras and safety equipment in all the AMC-run school. Also, the administration has made a provision to construct three new schools in Dhudheshwar, Vasna and Odhav.
The administrator has allocated Rs 12 crore for student development, Rs 8 crore for new schools, Rs 2 crore for setting up smart classrooms and Rs 50 lakh have been allocated for the celebration of birth anniversaries of national leaders.
