Students studying in engineering colleges will now be judged more on the basis of skills and understanding of concept, rather than subject knowledge. A model exam format is being prepared by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and it will be circulated among institutions to be followed from academic year 2018-19.

The objective behind this initiative is to improve employability of students and to increase the percentage of students being placed from the current 40 per cent to 60 per cent.

This is one of the many steps that the central government is taking to improve the quality of engineering education in the country. The AICTE which has a large number of private as well as public institutions under it has prepared a 10 pointer plan to be implemented.

With a view to improve the standards of technical education and to provide competent technical manpower for the Make-In-India campaign, the Council has approved a number of initiatives that include making internships mandatory for engineering students, revising the curriculum, training for teachers and imparting soft-skills to students to make them industry ready.

Apart from this, they are also making the accreditation process for institutions more strict and streamlined but at the same time ensuring that there are more programmes.

“At least half of all the programmes in the technical institutions shall be accredited through the National Bureau of Accreditation before 2022. Unless there is credible progress each year, the approval of the institutions can be refused,” a senior official at AICTE said.

“In order to assist the institutions in meeting the mandatory requirements for applying for accreditation, a separate mechanism will be put in place,” he added.

The council also wants increase the percentage of programmes accredited from 15 per cent to 50 per cent.
