A number of colleges, in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) — among the world’s largest technical professional associations — is set to launch a website to encourage students to patent their innovations. The colleges that have banded together to spearhead this initiative include Sardar Patel Institute of Technology, Thakur College of Engineering & Technology and Alamuri Ratnamala Institute of Engineering and Technology.

The website, which aims to educate students about Intellectual Property rights, will be launched on April 26, which is celebrated as the World Intellectual Property Day.

In fact, the number of patents filed by Mumbai University’s teachers and students has come down to zero in 2015-16. “Applying for a patent seems scary for students. Also, there is little institutional support in most cases. We want to encourage more students to file patents through this initiative,” said Dinesh Israni, Principal, ARMEIT, and a member of IEEE.

The new site will simplify the process of filing patents by guiding students with the help of dummy forms. It will also guide students through the parent registration process by providing assistance through subject mentors. “We have roped in several experts from colleges and research institutes across the state. These mentors will guide them through the patent registration process,” said Dyaneshwar Kamble, Board Member, IEEE. Kamble said the website will provide a fillip to the number of patents filed in the country. “If we look at patents filed by Indians, most are filed by senior scientists, researchers and teachers. We should be aware that there is a lot of innovation happening among the youth. If we encourage them to patent their innovation, they will be encouraged to innovate more,” he added.

Pratik Baheti, a final-year Electronics Engineering student from Nagpur, is among the student-mentors who will guide students through the patent process. Baheti has recently published two of his approved patents from 2015.
