Good marks not good enough for students

Career counsellors and help lines in the city are receiving unexpected calls these days.

Having geared up to tackle queries from students after the SSC results were announced, many of the calls coming in are from students with reasonably good scores.

“Many of the calls we received were from students of who had scored in their mid-70’s.

This wasn’t really expected,” said Paras Sharma, programme coordinator of ICall, a help line by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

The common concern for these students is that they haven’t scored as expected and that their percentage has left them with little choice in terms of college and stream. “My son had expected around 80% so he could get admission to the science stream in a nearby college but he scored only 72%. We are not sure what to do next since the cut-offs are expected to rise,” said Thane resident, Mangesh Mhatre.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education’s help line received fewer calls from SSC students as compared to those received from HSC students. The help line had answered approximately 75 calls on day one. “A lot of students called us because their doubts weren’t cleared on the board’s help line,” said Sharma.

Another common reason that students have been calling help lines in the city are to clear their doubts on the procedures that they need to follow for revaluation and re-checking.

“Most of the calls were regarding doubts about recounting, revaluation and application procedures,” said an official who is manning the state board’s help line.

Experts suggest that students must stick to their choice of stream and not bother about the college.
