Students who want to take a shorter route to career after clearing the HSC exam and not go for the longer degree route due to financial and other constraints still have various career opportunities, say experts.

The common belief among students on what should be the adequate education qualification when applying for a job is that many companies pay very less salary to 10+2 diploma holders compared to graduates. Deciding a level of education which is short and sufficient for job is very important.

Career counsellor Vivek Velankar said, “Though immediate earning options are less for 10+2 diploma or certificate course holders, still there are opportunities for everybody.

Ultimately what efforts you put and how you perform in the career path you choose is very important.”

There are many diploma courses one can do after HSC exam, says Velankar, which can give 100% placements. “Even after standard XII exams a person can straightaway get employed in information technology enabled services (ITES) companies like BPO and call centres after a  short-term six months skill development courses,” he said.

Velankar said that the hot diploma courses that are presently giving 100% placements are in surface coating technology, rubber technology, hotel management & catering, pharmacy (for career as medical representative), and hardware networking.

He added that students who have passed standard XII with science can also enroll for degree or diploma in optometry and get into a primary healthcare profession.

Jagannath Rathi Vocational Guidance & Training Institute (JRVGTI) director Shrikrishna Kanetkar said that while student counseling they always insist that students complete their graduation parallel to the diploma course. “Looking at the social aspect, a graduate is still more preferred than a 10+2 diploma holder, though it is not a necessity. A student can prefer to do graduation along with the diploma programme,” he said. He said that at JRVGTI there are two courses in travel & tourism and geopolitics & international relationship for HSC passed students.
