According to latest reports and surveys, Australia and New Zealand are emerging as new top choices for Indian students who want to study abroad.
Fears of racial attacks and changes in the United State’s immigration policy, and stringent visa policies for the United Kingdom (UK) has affected Indian students’ decision to study in these two countries.
According to the Open Doors Report 2016, US universities registered a 26 per cent decline in undergraduate applications from Indian students, and a 15 per cent decline in graduate applications. So where are Indian students headed to?
According to latest reports and surveys, Australia and New Zealand are emerging as new top choices for Indian students who want to study abroad.
The enrolment of Indian students in New Zealand was 53 per cent more this year as compared to last year.
Talking about this rise in numbers of Indians students, John Laxon, Regional Director, South and South East Asia and Middle East, Education New Zealand, said, “Indian students are embracing New Zealand’s world-class education offerings, with a 53 per cent increase in first-time student visa approvals for our universities in 2017 already.”
“Students are choosing New Zealand over more traditional markets such as the United States and United Kingdom because it offers a safe, welcoming and high quality education environment. For instance, all of New Zealand’s universities are ranked in the top three per cent worldwide,” he added.
To encourage the best students from India to come to New Zealand, Education New Zealand, the government agency for international education, has announced several initiatives focussed on specialist subject areas, scholarships, and short-term internships, to name a few.
Australia is also one of the favourite options for Indian students. It emerged as the second most preferred destination for studies for Indian students in 2016-17 as 11 per cent of the total students going abroad made their way ‘Down Under’.
