Prince William is said to have stepped into his late mother's footsteps, as he was seen serving up slices of cake at a hostel for the homeless yesterday.

William, 27, who was dressed casually in sweater, shirt, jeans and trainers, had earlier served up breakfast at a charity hostel in London's Soho.

"Obviously my breakfast skills are horrendous," the Daily Express quoted him as joking.

"I wasn't allowed to cook an egg without an hour's health and safety briefing," he said.

When it came to cutting the cake to celebrate the 40th birthday of homeless charity Centrepoint, he inquired if he needed to go through the same briefing as before.

"Do I need a health and safety briefing for this knife as well?" he asked.

William has been the charity's patron since 2005, and he spent an hour and 20 minutes chatting to young people.

"It's much more intimate than doing a big place all suited up," he said.

"For me it's much more rewarding and I think because there's a bit more feeling to it," he stated.

Michael O'Higgins, the charity's chairman, added: "Prince William interacts very well with the young people and he really cares. You can see it in the body language."
