The Obama administration is moving toward possible new arms sales to Taiwan, including design work on diesel-electric submarines.

China on Thursday said it opposed any new US arms sales to Taiwan, following comments from an Obama administration official who said Washington was weighing fresh sales to the disputed island, including submarines.
"We are firmly opposed to US arms sales to Taiwan," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Jiang Yu told a regular briefing.
The Obama administration is moving toward possible new arms sales to Taiwan, including design work on diesel-electric submarines, Robert Kovac, acting deputy assistant secretary of state for defense trade, told Reuters.
China says Taiwan is a breakaway province.
