India backs Nepal's coalition government

India has extended support to Nepal's CPN-UML-led government amid a Maoist-triggered political crisis here and expressed hope that the ruling coalition would take the peace process to its logical conclusion and draft a new Constitution.
    
India's support to the Nepalese government was conveyed by prime minister Manmohan Singh to his counterpart Madhav Kumar Nepal during their meeting on Friday on the sidelines of the UN climate conference in Copenhagen, according to the National News Agency (RSS) here.
    
Singh hoped that the Nepal government would draft a new Constitution as per the people's sentiments within the stipulated timeframe of May 2010, the report said.
    
The Indian prime minister also hoped that his Nepalese counterpart would succeed in resolving the current political stalemate, premier Nepal was quoted as saying in Copenhagen.
    
Nepal said Singh expressed India's commitment to provide any kind of help for Nepal's development and stability as per the Nepalese people's desire.
    
He said Singh suggested to him that he forge consensus with the main opposition Maoists, who have been agitating against the government demanding restoration of 'civilian supremacy'.
    
Nepal also met US president Barack Obama, who inquired about the country's ongoing peace process, said the prime minister.
    
Besides, Nepal met his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao in Copenhagen on the margins of the climate summit.
