Two small planes collided in mid air and plunged into the ocean off Los Angeles harbour in the United States on Friday.

According to an Associated Press report, the planes collided at 3:30 pm local time and went into the water about two miles outside the harbour entrance. US Coast Guard and other officials confirmed this development.

The crash site was 0.5 kilometers south of the Angels Gate light.

It is not known how many people were on board and what their fate is.

Lifeguard boats and rescue divers immediately sprung into action. As night approached, about two dozen divers were called in to search the area. The harbour entrance was closed to traffic while the search continued.

“They found both a partial tail number and then a second tail number,” Los Angeles County lifeguard Captain Ken Haskett said to AP.

But the planes may be at the bottom of the water, Haskett felt.
