Lady Day: How Google employees are fighting inherent sexism like a boss

More than 800 members of Google’s staff are standing up to sexism by adding the world ‘Lady’ to their job title. The incident actually took place after a shareholder reportedly referred to company CFO Ruth Porat ‘lady CFO’.

Sonen Capital's Danielle Ginach who took the microphone to admonish the shareholder who called her Lady CFO said. "I am sorry to put another shareholder on the spot. But Ms. Porat is the CFO, not the lady CFO.

She told USA Today last week: “I was in disbelief when he (the shareholder) said it," Ginach told USA TODAY last week. "When it was my turn to speak, there was no way I was not going to acknowledge it. She has been a tremendous leader for Google, but her leadership aside, that was an unbelievably sexist comment. Imagine addressing the 'man CFO.' What is the relationship between gender and CFO?"

Meg Mason, Google’s partner operations manager for shipping said: "I wanted to do something fun and 'Googley' that allowed us all to stand together, and to show that someone's gender is entirely irrelevant to how they do their job."

Women and men within the company are adopting the ‘lady’ prefix, making the change in their signatures for the last week. Mason believes the response effectively conveys how gender is irrelevant to one’s job.
