Considering there are three cricket associations in Gujarat, Modi will take to the BCCI a formidable force of resources and influence. Moreover, the new GCA president has Jaitley on his side to guide him. “Jaitley, a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat, knows the ins and outs of the BCCI,” a close Modi aide said. “So the two will work on a strategy to take on the ruling BCCI faction.”
The aide said that the chief minister would not spend too much time on niceties at the meeting. “He will use the first AGM to acclimatise himself to the conditions in India’s cricket establishment,” the aide said. “But at the same time, he will not allow anyone to dictate terms to him. After all, he is a powerful political leader.”
When Modi was crowned the new ‘Sardar’ of the GCA earlier this week, some pundits had observed that he had entered the cricket field a little late. But it appears that he will make up for lost time in grasping the levers of the world’s wealthiest cricket body. “I believe that there will be some action from Modi that will leave a long-lasting impact on the BCCI,” the aide said.
