L’affaire Yuvraj Singh is getting curiouser and curiouser. A day after reports surfaced about his removal as the skipper of Kings XI Punjab, there is stoic silence in the franchisee camp. “Not aware” or “will get back on this” were the standard refrains from the people attached to the Indian Premier League franchise. Finally, it was informed to the media that there will soon be a “release”.

Some officials connected to the team claimed that the explosive middle-order batsman has, in fact, voluntarily relinquished his job to concentrate on batting just like Virender Sehwag did for Delhi Daredevils. “He was not sacked. He himself wanted to concentrate on batting,” an official said. Yuvraj could not be reached for comment as he was playing in the T20 game against Sri Lanka in Nagpur.

When contacted, his agents denied knowledge about the news. “Neither Yuvraj nor Cornerstone has received a confirmation,” said his agents. “As of now, there are a lot of rumours going around and we cannot confirm this story.”

Things should become clear after a meeting of team officials in Mohali in a couple of days. The Indian team will reach Mohali on Thursday for their second Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka. It will be held on December 12.

There have been speculations galore — from power struggle among the owners of the team to dissatisfaction of coach Tom Moody about Yuvraj’s captaincy — about the reasons behind the sacking.

But nothing could be confirmed. Ness Wadia, one of the co-owners of the side, was not available for comment. Coach Moody, who is currently associated with the Perth-based Western Australia team, chose not to comment. “He in the midst of a match and he will not comment on Kings XI Punjab issue,” a Western Australia Cricket Association spokesman said.
