One of the Indian players who took part in the just concluded World Junior Volleyball Championship in Balewadi, Pune, may have contracted swine flu.

Though Somnath Girigoud’s throat swab result is still awaited, he was advised not to take the flight back home with his teammates.

Instead, the authorities asked his brother to come and escort him home in Belgaum.
India’s chief coach MH Kumara told DNA: “He is ill and very weak and has high fever. As a precautionary measure he was asked not to take the flight along with other players. His brother has been summoned to drive him home.”

Somnath was down with fever on August 6 following which he was taken to a hospital. He recovered quickly but his illness returned three days later on August 9, the day of the final. He woke up with high fever and had to be put on saline.

However, Somnath was seen at the dugout during India’s third-place playoff against Argentina in the evening when DNA caught up with him. Somnath, donning a mask, said: “I had high fever, but the doctors said that it has nothing to do with the swine flu.”
