Tournament favourite, Aditya Mehta defeated Shahbaz Khan seven frames to four in the final of the Ekta World Shyam Shroff Memorial Open invitation snooker tournament organised and hosted by Khar Gymkhana on Sunday.

Mehta gained an early advantage in the match by easily winning the first set 73-7 with a break of 56. However, Khan came back strongly in the second frame 34-69.

The 22-year-old went on to win the next two frames too to go up 3 frames to one. He was well on his way to win the fifth frame as well but Mehta cleared the table with a 67-point break to come back in the game.

Khan again took a 47-0 lead in the sixth frame but Mehta came back again to draw level at three frames each. Khan won a low scoring seventh frame 31-44, which was the last one he won in the game.

Mehta won the crucial eight set 71-17 to draw level with four frames each and then the multiple Asian games medals winner showed his class by winning the next three frames without allowing the rookie to win a single point.

In the last two frames he made breaks of 85 and 95 respectively to clinch the game and the title.

After the game Shahbaz Khan admitted that it was the fifth frame in which he lost the game. “I was 54 points up and yet failed to win. It proved to be the pivotal point as it would have been difficult to come back from three frames down.”

Following his victory, Mehta said, “The balls were mean to me in the early stages of the game, but I must say that
Shahbaz was the better potter today.”

Result: Aditya Mehta (Indian Oil) defeated Shahbaz Khan (BPCL) (73-7 34-69 37-51 45-73 67-52 63-54 31-44 71-17 80-0 85-0 95-0)
