Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that star striker Wayne Rooney does not seem to be lacking in confidence, but that the personal torment being suffered by him is not something anyone do young would want to be faced with.

Rooney is battling to save his marriage to wife Coleen after hooker Jenny Thompson revealed that he had paid her for seven sex sessions at a Manchester hotel.

The stress and attention on his private life appears to be affecting him, as the striker has scored just one goal for United this season.

“I don’t believe Wayne has a confidence problem. The boy is finally starting to realise what kind of focus is on him as a human being. The boy can’t turn without a camera being on him, but for a young person, that is not what you want,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

“You want to play and enjoy your football without that attention to you as it can be quite exhausting,” he added.

Rooney was rested for Wednesday’s 5-2 Carling Cup win against Scunthorpe, but is likely to feature in Sunday’s Premier League match against Bolton.
