The tall trio of Abhilesh Paul, Mihir Pandey and Veneet Mathew came up with
performances as impressive as their imposing figures to help Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) record a 72-64 win over Punjab National Bank in a men’s league match of the Savio Cup All-India basketball tournament at Don Bosco High School, Matunga, on Thursday.

This was IOB’s third win from four outings, while Punjab slumped to their third defeat from four games and are out of reckoning for the final. Of the other four teams in the fray, Shooting for Success (USA) are placed comfortably with three wins from as many matches and are favourites to reach the final, while IOB and Indian Railways find themselves embroiled in the battle for the second berth.

Shooting for Success made Indian Railways their latest victim, scoring an authoritative 88-77 win over them in a late match on Wednesday.

IOB and Punjab were tied 32-32 at half time. While IOB haled the edge in the first quarter, leading it 18-14, Punjab returned the compliment in the second, taking it 18-14 to level scores at half time.

Punjab maintained their robust play in the third quarter with Amritpal Singh finding the basket regularly to help them win the 10-minute session 20-17 and take the lead at that crucial juncture. However, lack of experience in the closing stages proved costly as IOB’s Pandey and Mathew tightened the defence and also dominated under the rival basket to level scores and then pull ahead. Their dominating show helped them win the last quarter 24-12 and with it the match.

Paul top scored for IOB with 19 points, while Pandey and Mathew contributed to their win with 17 and 16 points respectively. For Punjab, Amritpal was the pick of the players with 26 points, Amjyot Singh contributed 12 , while Gurkripal and Jagdeep pitched in with 10 each.
