The Narhari Amin-led group may be credited with developing infrastructure for cricket in the region, but the new management led by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has bigger plans. They are planning to introduce a system that will benefit the players in the state.

A source in the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) said that software to compile the scores of all matches played in the different districts affiliated to it will be installed. “The district associations will be linked online. The software will accumulate the data from these associations. Consequently, this data will provide players who have performed well in district matches opportunities to play for Gujarat,” the source said. This data will also come in handy for the selection committee. “With all the data,” the GCA source said, “the selectors will not face any problem while announcing the team. Talks with a software consultant have already begun.”

Moreover, the GCA administration has roped in former Test player Anshuman Gaekwad as a consultant for the Gujarat Ranji team. “I will be joining the team on October 1,” said Gaekwad, who will be at the helm of affairs for the second time. Two years ago, Gaekwad had stepped down as head consultant after a three-year stint. Former ODI player Ashok Patel, who had taken over this role, was asked to resign on Saturday.

Gaekwad, a former India coach, admitted there was little time left for preparations, but said that he has started his work. “I am already on the job. I have started gathering data of the past two years. And since I know most of the players, getting down to business will not be a difficult task,” he said.

The new management has, meanwhile, accepted his request to remain on a part-time basis. “I will be there throughout the season, but not during the off-season, which they have no issues with,” said Gaekwad, who met GCA vice-president Amit Shah in Gandhinagar on Sunday.

Jayendra Sahegal will be assisting Gaekwad and he could not hide his excitement. “Gaekwad’s appointment will definitely help state cricketers to grow. I am eagerly looking forward to this new assignment,” he said. Meanwhile, Vijay Patel, who assisted Gaekwad in his first spell, will take charge of the GCA academy.
